Internet speed FAQ

How does the device speed test differ from the Wi-Fi gateway test?
The device speed test checks the speed between your smartphone, tablet, computer, or other device and the internet. You can run the test through a cellular (mobile) network, a wired broadband connection, or your home Wi-Fi.

A gateway speed test checks the speed between your AT&T Wi-Fi gateway and our network. It reflects the speed coming into your home.

What are internet download speeds?
Download speeds show how quickly data travels from the internet to your device. A higher download speed means you can stream, download files, or access websites faster.

What are internet upload speeds?
Upload speeds reflect how fast data travels from your device to the internet. A higher upload speed result makes posting files or images to social media or other sites faster.

What speeds can I expect from my devices?
Your device speed varies, depending on the number of devices you connect to Wi-Fi, how you use them, their age and type, and Wi-Fi signal strength.
